Herbert Hoover Made Star-Spangled Banner Official on March 3, 1931

President Hoover signed a congressional act on this date in 1931 making The Star-Spangled Banner the official national anthem of the United States. The Star-Spangled Banner was written by Francis Scott Key in 1814 after he had witnessed the massive British bombardment of Fort McHenry in Baltimore, Maryland during the War of 1812.
