Dang That Caterpillar Hair In My Eye!

It's been a crazy couple of days for me.  I had an eye issue, with my good eye - the one I can actually see with - so I was both concerned and scared.  I called the emergency line over the weekend and the nice doctor on call (different doc than mine) called me in some eye drops but the membrane around my eye kept on getting more irritated and progressively more painful as each day went by.  I have been to my Ophthalmologist's office twice in two days.  I hope the issue is taken care of. The first time my doc found a fiber in my eye.  Good - that's out of my eye now.   The second visit he found a caterpillar hair lodged in the corner of my eye which would also migrate to other places in the membrane causing pain.  Great news!!! I do believe that my doctor got everything out of my eye this time. This little bugger caused my eye to get scratched up.  Geeesh!!  My eye is feeling better now, thank goodness!   I am just glad that my great doctor found out what the problem was with my eye.  After looking at Wikipedia, apparently those little caterpillar hair buggers can cause tremendous damage when they enter your system depending on the type of caterpillar the hair came from which may coincide with what region you live in.

"Caterpillar hairs have also been known to cause kerato-conjunctivitis. The sharp barbs on the end of Caterpillar hairs can get lodged in soft tissues and mucus membranes such as the eyes. Once they enter such tissues, they can be difficult to extract, often exacerbating the problem as they migrate across the membrane.


This becomes a particular problem in an indoor setting. The hairs easily enter buildings through ventilation systems and accumulate in indoor environments because their small size, which makes it difficult for them to be vented out. This accumulation increases the risk of human contact in indoor environments."

This type mentioned above is what I had.

But, depending on the type of caterpillar hair it has the capacity to cause alot of damage to your body:

"Caterpillar hair has been known to be a cause of human health problems. Caterpillar hairs sometimes have venoms in them and species from approximately 12 families of moths or butterflies worldwide can inflict serious human injuries ranging from urticarial dermatitis and atopic asthma to osteochondritis, consumption coagulopathy, renal failure, and intracerebral hemorrhage.^[22] Skin rashes are the most common, but there have been fatalities.^[23] Lonomia is a frequent cause of death in Brazil with 354 cases were reported between 1989 and 2005. Lethality ranging up to 20% with death caused most often by intracranial hemorrhage."

Who would have thought something so tiny could cause so much bodily damage?  

My Endometriosis Update

I was able to see my doctor on last Thursday.  He is so kind, gentle and understanding.  Well, it looks like I am going back on the Depot Lupron to stop my endometriosis.  I thought that I had a fever back when I saw him but may not have actually had a fever like I thought.  My body may have been trying to fight off the endo and it may have felt like I had a fever because of that. But, now I am positive that I have a fever, as the thermometer says so.  My pain has been pretty dang bad on and off depending on what I do.  I am looking forward to getting the shot this Thursday and getting some relief for my pain.  I am also supposed to get a sonogram to make sure it isn't anything besides endo.  I am thinking positive and hoping that I will be pain free soon. I am Sick of Endometriosis

I usually don't rant about myself, but here it goes. It seems as though my endometriosis is baaack. The pain from endometriosis (endo) can be extreme. Don't get me wrong any relief I get from this horrible disease is great and somehow I was pain free for about 5 or 6 months which I am extremely grateful for but for the past 2-3 years I have had to deal with excruciating pain. I have had trouble with endo since I was 19 yrs old. Over the past 13 years I have had a total of five surgeries with regards to endometriosis. The first one was to identify the endo. The second and third surgeries were to remove the endo using a technique called ablasion, or burning it out. The fourth surgery was actually a non-surgery or my doctor could do nothing because the endo was so widespread inside me. In between that and the fifth surgery I went on something called Depo-Lupron that makes you go into menopause. That helped me out a little while I waited for my next surgery. My last surgery was more complicated than the rest and thus I had to see a specialist who was one out of  only two doctors in PA that performed the surgery I needed. He performed a laparscopic presacral neurectomy and also did a combination of excising (cutting away) and ablation (burning away) of the endometriosis. He was fabulous and a very kind doctor who answered any and all questions my husband and I had about the surgery. Well, in February of this year I started having problems again and went back on the Lupron in May. Thank Goodness that it has helped me for about six months. I am trying to think positive but sometimes its hard with dealing with all the pain. I know God is looking out for me but I hope he leads me to a sit down job. Thank You for listening to my rant. Here is some information on endometriosis:



Endometriosis is a condition in which the tissue that normally lines the uterus (endometrium) grows in other areas of the body, causing pain, irregular bleeding, and possible infertility.

The tissue growth (implant) typically occurs in the pelvic area, outside of the uterus, on the ovaries, bowel, rectum, bladder, and the delicate lining of the pelvis. However, the implants can occur in other areas of the body, too.

The cause of endometriosis is unknown, but there are a number of theories. One suggests that the endometrial cells (loosened during menstruation) may "back up" through the fallopian tubes into the pelvis, where they implant and grow in the pelvic or abdominal cavities. This is called retrograde-menstruation.


Other theories include:

A faulty immune system causes menstrual tissue to implant and grow in areas other than the uterine lining

Cells lining the abdominal cavity may develop endometriosis

Certain families may have problems with their genes that make a woman more likely to develop endometriosis
Presacral Neurectomy is the surgical removal of the presacral plexus – the group of nerves that conducts the pain signal from the uterus to the brain.
